The Flight

Lily-Mai is an eight-year-old girl. She loved to play with her toy aeroplanes and always had a dream to one day fly high in the big blue sky. It was always her wish to be up with the fluffy clouds, and to fly like a bird. She loved the natural world and seeing the stars at night gave her a thrill that one day she might fly to the stars too.

One night Lily-Mai went to bed thinking about her toy aeroplanes, and then seeing the stars outside of her bedroom as she looked out into the dark sky through her window. The stars twinkled so brightly that night and each time she looked upwards she felt like the stars were keeping watch over her and before long she was fast asleep.

The next day Lily-Mai was walking amongst the flowers and found something surprising in her garden. It was a small, brightly coloured aeroplane standing on her lawn. The aeroplane was shiny and red with silver wings, and there were blocks under the wheels to stop it moving in the breeze that made the flowers sway backwards and forwards. It looked like a very neat and tidy aeroplane, and not unlike the aeroplanes she played with at her home. Lily-Mai felt very excited and curious as the little aeroplane glistened in the sunshine.

Lily-Mai couldn’t resist taking a closer look and walked over to inspect the new arrival in her garden. As she walked towards the aeroplane she heard a voice which made her jump as the aeroplane door opened unexpectedly. A friendly voice called out from the inside the aeroplane and kindly asked if she would like to see more inside, and invited her into the aeroplane. “Climb up the yellow ladder on the outside of the aeroplane,” the voice said. Lily-Mai was a little scared at first, and wondered what she should do. She was a very brave little girl and as the aeroplane was in her garden she thought it must be safe. She climbed up the ladder on the aeroplane and climbed through the door and went inside.
